FinOps for AI workloads: tracking cost per agent
Token-based pricing turns every prompt into a cost line. A practical model for attributing AI spend to the agents and teams that create it.

Traditional FinOps allocates compute and storage to owners. AI adds a new unit: tokens, model calls and agent runs. Without attribution, AI spend shows up as one growing line that nobody owns.
Three practices that work
- Tag every AI resource and deployment with an owner, application and environment.
- Record usage per agent or application, not just per subscription.
- Pair cost with a value measure the business owner agrees with — tickets resolved, hours saved, documents processed.
With that in place, cost anomalies become actionable: the alert goes to the team that owns the agent, with the context to decide whether the spend is worth it.
